Andrew Yang’s Couture Dolls

andrew yangThe work of New York City based artist and illustrator Andrew Yang has more than grabbed my attention recently. The young talent, based in Brooklyn, grew up with a mother who happened to have a huge collection of Madame Alexander dolls so it’s no wonder they should play a huge part in his adult life. Yang creates 27″  rag dolls called KOUKLITAS (derived from the Greek word for Doll – Koukla) and dresses them in the most beautiful materials and fabrics you can imagine – all to reflect runway looks from designers that have caught his eye. There is something very innocent about that idea, as if he is taking so much in from the outfits he sees on runway models that he just has to have a go himself. Only thing is, it’s more than just ‘having a go’. Yang uses silks, satin, chiffon, alligator skin and thousands upon thousands of beads and jewels. The illustrated faces on Yang’s dolls are so charming it almost tempts me to part with the $900 he charges for them.
Along with all of this hard work a short film has also been made featuring the KOUKLITASwatch it here.
